enfranchisement
Usage Note
Affrancazione derives from affrancare (to free, to stamp a letter). In historical and legal Italian it referred to the liberation of serfs or the redemption of a mortgage; in postal usage affrancatura (not affrancazione) is the more common term for franking. The word now appears mainly in formal historical or legal texts.
