affatto

at all

adverb ahf-FAHT-toh Less Common

Usage Note

Affatto almost always appears in negative sentences: non capisco affatto (I don't understand at all). Used alone as a response, affatto! can mean 'not at all!' (like 'absolutely not'). A common learner trap: affatto on its own can sound like a strong denial, so context matters. Avoid the archaism of using it in positive sentences (once possible, now sounded odd in modern Italian).

Examples

"Non mi piace affatto questo posto."

Natural Translation

I don't like this place at all.

Literal Translation

Not to-me pleases at-all this place.
